The paper aims at analysing the competitiveness and sustainability of the wine chain of Emilia Romagna – Italy, by applying the chain approach to assess the value distribution along the wine chain. The study has been carried out with the analyses of 153 Emilia-Romagna financial statements from 2004 to 2008 and with the implementation of focus groups among opinion leaders. The wine chain shows an inconsistent capacity of creating value over time with notable negative performances of farmers, whose value appears fluctuating compared to the other chain’s stages. The inadequate definition of strategic chain and network alliance leads to internal competitiveness entailing a declining sustainability of the entire chain.
