Antisemitismus in Deutschland und Italien. Kontrastive Perspektiven auf ein gesamtgesellschaftliches Phänomen

While dealing with and reacting to the ‘Zivilisationsbruch‘ (breach of civilization; Dan Diner) as paradigmatized by Auschwitz is a central challenge in both Germany and Italy, the topic of antisemitism has been receiving considerable political attention. And for good reason: as rightwing populist parties have been gaining, there has been an increase in antisemitic attitudes in both countries for years. This will be briefly addressed and warned about here, because with the advancing historization of national-socialist and fascist tyranny and – considering few to the times are still living – the democratic culture of remembrance finds itself at a crucial moment: its profound transformation must not be reduced to mere days of remembrance, but must remain an integral part of the collective consciousness.
