The study focuses on the quality assurance schemes (QAS) operating in seven EU member states to understand their operation and their role in the food supply chain dynamics. A wide number of QAS has been analysed in those countries through specific national case studies. QASs have been than classified according to differtn criteria and a SWOT analysis has been applied to asses their effectiveness in the respect of the main EU general objective (e.g. competitiveness of the food supply system, rural development, fair competition, etc.). Recommendations are provided for the better development of the whole quality assurance system at EU level.
