We performed an open label prospective pilot study about cognitive effects of levetiracetam (LEV) in add-on in 10 children affected by epilepsy with generalized or partial seizures. We considered seizure frequency and semeiology, EEG, side effects, behavioural and cognitive features to evaluate efficacy and tolerability of LEV. Cognitive functions resulted unchanged in the sample as a whole, except for an improvement of visuo-spatial abilities and reasoning by analogy. The neuropsychological assessment was unchanged in 9/10 children, one patient had an improvement. LEV seems to be harmless on cognitive functions in childhood epilepsy.
