In order to optimize the creep-feed supply to suckling piglets, the growth parameters and the mortality rate of 165 piglets (deriving from 16 litters), either receiving a prestarter-feed from the 5th day of life or from the 11th day of life were studied. The earlier availability of the prestarter-feed offered on day 5th did not resulted in any improvement of the growing parameters or health. Piglets receiving the prestarter-feed from day 11th of life showed, in fact, the higher live weight at weaning (P<0.05). In the following experimental phase, lasting 39 days from weaning, this difference was still appreciable (P<0.05). In the light of the rather high cost of the creep-feeding technique, from our data it is suggested that a feed supply from day 11th of life is more profitable for piglets than an earlier feed administration from day 5th of life.
