The process of learning the basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) starts very early – even before formal schooling – and progresses through lifetime. Drawing on the example of multiplication, this contribution reflects on the basis of multiplicative thinking in kindergarten, its evolution in schooling, and what is still available to adults. Research data will support and instantiate the claim that learning multiplication is a lifelong process.
