Normothermic ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) injury is an important cause for liver damage occurring during surgical procedures, including hepatic resection and liver transplantation. Fatty livers are extremely sensitive to the deleterious effects of I-R injury.1 Oxidative damage to mitochondria is a key event during I-R in normal livers,2 but very little is known in the specific setting about fatty livers. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the occurrence of oxidative injury in mitochondria from fatty and normal livers exposed to warm I-R.

Abstract

Normothermic ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) injury is an important cause for liver damage occurring during surgical procedures, including hepatic resection and liver transplantation. Fatty livers are extremely sensitive to the deleterious effects of I-R injury.1 Oxidative damage to mitochondria is a key event during I-R in normal livers,2 but very little is known in the specific setting about fatty livers. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the occurrence of oxidative injury in mitochondria from fatty and normal livers exposed to warm I-R.
