This article explores the theme of music in Mandelstam's «Conversation about Dante» and Dante's «Commedia». It shows that, unlike other authors who write about music in Dante's poem, Mandelstam employs images belonging to the semantic field of music to express the notions of momentum, duration and polyphonic unity of multiple elements. While Dante utilizes these notions to describe the cosmos and the spiritual journey of man, Mandelstam uses them to express his views on the existence of poetic matter.

Abstract
