The paper explores the issue of directionality, i.e. the question of whether translation is made into or out of one’s first language, by placing it within the framework of Translator Studies. Drawing upon this framework, the article investigates the topic from the biographical perspective of multilingual literary translators, with the aim of promoting a phenomenological approach to translators as experiencing subjects, that is as living bodies who constitute themselves through language and translation.
