Fibrous epulides (gingival hyperplasia) are rare in the horse. The classification of these gingival lesions in the literature varies greatly and leads to some confusion when trying to compare reports from different sources. The feature of the 5-cm-mass described in this report are those of mature fibrous tissue with chronic-active inflammatory reaction developed in the gingival of a 18-year-old Italian saddle horse gelding, and diagnosed as fibrous epulis or fibrous hyperplasia.
