"Sicché"

This paper briefly describes the Italian form "sicché", already attested from the XIII century (though not yet univerbated: "sì che") both in prose and in poetry with causal-conclusive value, but at least sometimes also with consecutive-final value. Used at least until the beginning of the twentieth century also in non-fictional prose and in essays, in contemporary Italian it belongs to the high, formal register, it is not particularly common but it is easily traceable e.g. in essays and in literary narrative prose, where it can connote the mode of expression of snobbish characters. This affectation also emerges in cultured orality of high register, but is instead completely absent from the Italian spoken in Tuscany, where the use of "sicché" is completely natural in spontaneous daily orality, and where the form can co-occur with "and", thus showing that it is not a coordinating conjunction but a "connecting adverbial".

L'articolo descrive sinteticamente la forma italiana "sicché", attestata già nella lingua delle Origini (pur se non ancora univerbata: "sì che") sia in prosa che in versi con valore causale-conclusivo ma almeno a volte anche consecutivo-finale. Utilizzata almeno fino agli inizi del Novecento anche nella prosa non strettamente letteraria e saggistica, nell'italiano contemporaneo appartiene al registro alto, formale, non risulta particolarmente comune ma è facilmente rintracciabile ad es. nella scrittura saggistica e nella prosa narrativa letteraria, dove può connotare il modo di esprimersi di personaggi snob. Tale affettazione emerge anche nell'oralità colta di registro alto, ma è invece del tutto assente dall'italiano parlato in Toscana dove l'uso di "sicché" risulta del tutto naturale nell'oralità quotidiana spontanea, e dove la forma può co-occorrere con "e", mostrando così di non essere una congiunzione coordinante ma un "avverbio di collegamento".
