In his Commentary to the Sentences, Walter Chatton (ca. 1285/1290-1343) does not directly inquire about self-knowledge and the reflected acts of the soul of God or man. However, such themes can be found in the Prologue, in which the entire fifth ar ticle of the second question is concerned with the intellect’s re flected knowledge of itself. Starting from the way in which the Franciscan master understands the distinction between notitia intuitiva and abstractiva, what we will deal with here will be the topic of man’s self-knowledge and the argumentative strategies that, in the form of mental experiments, carve out boundaries and denounce limits of theological discourse

Abstract
In his Commentary to the Sentences, Walter Chatton (ca. 1285/1290-1343) does not directly inquire about self-knowledge and the reflected acts of the soul of God or man. However, such themes can be found in the Prologue, in which the entire fifth ar ticle of the second question is concerned with the intellect’s re flected knowledge of itself. Starting from the way in which the Franciscan master understands the distinction between notitia intuitiva and abstractiva, what we will deal with here will be the topic of man’s self-knowledge and the argumentative strategies that, in the form of mental experiments, carve out boundaries and denounce limits of theological discourseI documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
