In this work, I examine the illocutionary potential of some directive speech acts in Russian and Bulgarian in terms of politeness and interpersonal distance. I show that for performative verbs, the interplay between tense and aspect parameters serves a wide range of pragmatic functions, for example regulating the level of cooperation or aggression in the process of modern communication. Of particular interest is the use of the imperfective future forms in Russian directives.

Abstract

In this work, I examine the illocutionary potential of some directive speech acts in Russian and Bulgarian in terms of politeness and interpersonal distance. I show that for performative verbs, the interplay between tense and aspect parameters serves a wide range of pragmatic functions, for example regulating the level of cooperation or aggression in the process of modern communication. Of particular interest is the use of the imperfective future forms in Russian directives.
