The authors report 8 patients with cerebral palsy: 5 were epileptic, 1 had neonatal convulsions, all showed focal or multifocal EEG paroxysmal abnormalities. Every time they fell asleep, the 8 patients presented motor phenomena characterized by periodic muscle contractions (spasms) during the first stages of NREM sleep (ST1, ST2) without an ictal epileptic EEG discharge. The authors discuss the phenomena with respect to non epileptic paroxysmal events in childhood, sleep-wake transition disorders and the possible etiopathogenesis of the disturbance.
