This paper deals with the verbal prefixes po -, pod- and pri- from the point of view of their intensifying function. We proceed on the assumption that linguistic intensification can pertain to lexicon, word-formation, morphology and syntax. As for Russian attention has been mainly focused on the lexical means of intensification (Arutyunova 1988, Ubin 1974, Lisova 2015, Rodionova 2005). However, there are also works devoted to the derivational ways of expressing intensity (Palosi 2009, Beloglazova 2013, Ulukhanov 2017). We consider the linguistic phenomenon of intensification following Bolinger, «for any device that scales a quality, whether up or down or somewhere between the two» (Bolinger 1972, 17). We show that when attached to IPF base-verbs, prefixes po -, pod- and pri- function as intensifiers of the subjective evaluation of the quality of the action expressed by the basis with imperfective meaning. If verbs with prefixes po -, pod- and pri- are combined with adverbs of high and low intensity, the evaluative semantics of the prefix can be neutralized; in this case, the prefixed verb becomes a common perfective one. Joining prefixes po-, pod- and pri- to perfective prefixed verbs limits the degree of results achieved; in other words, the subjective assessment of this result emphasizes its “less than normal” realization. However, the combination of derived verbs thus obtained with booster adverbs neutralizes the attenuative meaning of the prefixes and adverbs act directly on the perfective stem (not containing prefixes po-, pod- and pri-). In view of their behavior the analyzed prefixes may be interpreted as intensifiers, namely diminishers.
