Dreams are very frequent in Maupassant’s short stories, both in his fantastic and naturalistic output. We will see how dreams in Maupassant perfectly reflect the various nineteenth-century conceptions of this phenomenon in France and its growing impact in literature. Dreams gradually lose their simple instrumental or allegorical role to become a means of representing characters’ psychology and motivating their behavior.

Abstract
Dreams are very frequent in Maupassant’s short stories, both in his fantastic and naturalistic output.
