The paper describes the main phases and results of a study which is part of a broader research aimed at assessing the changes occurred in Italian rural landscapes after the Second World War. The study deals with the definition of an areal sampling methodology suitable for the analysis of changes in the rural built environment in wide-area studies. The work represents a further development of a previous study (Tassinari et al., 2008), and is focused on the improvement of the criteria for the stratification of the sampling frame and the estimate of the descriptive parameters
