In the context of Homer's translations into Italian, very relevant was the experience of some early-19 th century poets, namely Ugo Foscolo and Vincenzo Monti, whose translations, in spite of their very different outcome, showed their communal need to distance themselves from 18 th century translations. These, although grammatically correct, were aesthetically poor, if not slightly ridiculous (for instance, the works by the cruscante academician Anton Maria Salvini). Though both attempts were extremely valuable and worthy of in-depth analysis, it is well known that Vincenzo Monti’s translations were incomparably more successful, in spite of the tentativeness of the tools he made use of. This research is focused on Foscolo's attempt to translate the first book of the Iliad , with particular attention to some passages that show Foscolo's effort to avoid repetition by means of a complex elaboration of ornamental epithets.
