This essay – based on the author’s paper from the seventh Leonardo Sciascia Colloquium held in Turin on 11/12 November 2016 – reviews the cinematic collaboration between Leonardo Sciascia and Elio Petri in the 1960s and 70s. Some of the letters they exchanged reveal Sciascia’s reactions to the screen adaptations of A ciascuno il suo and Todo modo, and two hypotheses are proffered as to why, from the second half of the 1970s on, Sciascia became disillusioned with cinema, and especially with the film versions of his novels.
