The article emphasizes the need to find new epistemological categories to redefine the relationship between medieval history and religious history, which has been in crisis for almost twenty years. After providing a broad historiographical overview and some concrete examples, the A. suggests restarting from fields of research – such as the history of religions, ethnolinguistics, cognitive science and evolutionary biology – that have been able to underline the great heuristic potential in the study of religious experience on the basis of new explicative paradigms of cultural change.
L’articolo sostiene l’urgenza di individuare nuove categorie epistemologiche attraverso cui ridefinire il rapporto tra storia medievale e storia religiosa, rapporto che è in crisi da almeno un ventennio. Dopo un’ampia rassegna storiografica, attraverso alcuni esempi concreti l’A. suggerisce di ripartire da quei campi di ricerca (dalla storia delle religioni all’etnolinguistica, dalle scienze cognitive alla biologia evolutiva) che, sulla base di nuovi paradigmi esplicativi del mutamento culturale, hanno saputo valorizzare le molteplici potenzialità euristiche insite nello studio dell’esperienza religiosa.
