Amicus noster, et numquam satis laudatus vir: nuovi documenti sui rapporti tra Campi e Ughelli

There is an obvious parallel between the work of canon Campi, who long searched archives and libraries in preparation for his ecclesiastical history of Piacenza, and the achievement of abbot Ughelli, who in the volumes of his Italia Sacra began publishing a history of all Italian dioceses when Campi was still striving to print his masterpiece. Historians have occasionally studied their relationship, focusing on the vast correspondence of the Cistercian abbot at the Vatican Library. A perusal of Campi’s papers has produced a new body of evidence regarding the relations between the two historians and their mutual influence.

Se il parallelismo tra quanto andava compiendo il canonico Campi per la storia ecclesiastica piacentina ed il progetto di una storia delle diocesi italiane che poco dopo avrebbe intrapreso l’abate Ughelli nella sua Italia Sacra è intuitivo e spesso esplicitato dalla storiografia, l’indagine sulle testimonianze del rapporto tra i due studiosi seicenteschi si è sinora concentrata sulla corrispondenza dello storico cistercense conservata alla Vaticana. La ricerca di documenti in materia tra i manoscritti di Campi permette di collocare le loro relazioni in più piena luce.
