The research moved from the observation of the inadequacy of current farm buildings for landscape integration purposes, and aimed at investigating possible ways for their qualitative improvement, by combining agriculture functional requirements with the current landscape quality objectives. The research, developed by considering a study area of the Emilia-Romagna region (Italy), focused on the specific objective of the definition of design criteria on the building scale, aimed at better integrating new rural buildings into the landscape. The study was structured through two sub-objectives, carried out in parallel. The former dealt with the definition of functional and dimensioning characteristics of farm buildings, by means of investigating a sample of farms in the study area; the latter dealt with the typological study of historical rural buildings. Historical rural building heritage, which constitutes an accumulation of empirical knowledge broadly associated with high architectural quality, has thus been considered as a template for modern building designs. The study assumed as main design themes the general composition of volumes, the solid part - hollow ratio and the characteristics of openings in outside walls. Specific design and solutions have also been defined to reduce inconsistency issues due to functional requirements and technical-economic constraints.

Abstract
Specific design and solutions have also been defined to reduce inconsistency issues due to functional requirements and technical-economic constraints.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
