This paper investigates certain cross-cultural aspects of legal interpreting based on the authors’ experience as interpreter for the city courts in Italy. Much of the data also derives from a survey the author is currently conducting in the region of Emilia Romagna, the aim of which is to gather data about the situation in Italy and to examine more closely the role of the interpreter as seen by the interpreter him/herself and as seen by the service provider.
