This work focuses its investigation on the letters exchanged between two important figures of European culture between 1911 and 1924: Ellen Key (1849-1926) and Romain Rolland (1866-1944). The great concern of both for the insurgent nationalism leading to the outbreak of the First World War can be seen in reading this correspondence. The collection of letters bears witness to the difficulty European intellectuals experienced in creating a common alliance against the ideology of war. A pedagogic message can also be extrapolated from this, aiming to lay the foundations of the education of European citizens of the future.

Abstract

This work focuses its investigation on the letters exchanged between two important figures of European culture between 1911 and 1924: Ellen Key (1849-1926) and Romain Rolland (1866-1944). The great concern of both for the insurgent nationalism leading to the outbreak of the First World War can be seen in reading this correspondence. The collection of letters bears witness to the difficulty European intellectuals experienced in creating a common alliance against the ideology of war. A pedagogic message can also be extrapolated from this, aiming to lay the foundations of the education of European citizens of the future.
