In fall 2011, the Heyman Center for the Humanities at Columbia University, with the support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, inaugurated a long-term program on the history of disciplines. This is the Introduction to short essays that were originally presented by Jeremy Adelman, Michele Alacevich, Victoria de Grazia, Ira Katznelson, and Nadia Urbinati at a round table on December 10, 2013, on the first anniversary of Albert Hirschman’s death, as part of this program.
