Three among the most famous laude of Iacopone da Todi testify some of the principal moments of the life of the Franciscan poet: his involvement in the lacerating and dramatic conflict that opposed the powerful Roman Colonna family to Boniface VIII, his following excommunication, his imprisonment in an underground jail, his exasperated moral tension. The first laude, written in 1297/98, is a hard and violent invective against the pope’s, his vices and errors, underlined in a crescendo of accusations (avarice, nepotism, love for the ephemeral things). Nevertheless Iacopone doesn't doubt the legitimacy of the election of the cardinal Caetani, wich is the principal accusation against the pope advanced by the Colonna. The other two laude are supplications ti the pope composed while in jail. The first one, written in 1299, is almost impudent and impertinent, while the second one, pf 1300, is more humble and grieved. They both enlighten Iacopone’s inner turmoil in the hard years of his imprisonment and testify an extraordinary and unexpected internal evolution.

Abstract
They both enlighten Iacopone’s inner turmoil in the hard years of his imprisonment and testify an extraordinary and unexpected internal evolution.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
