Ubiquitousvitalsignssensingandprocessingarepromisingalternativestoconventionalclinicaland ambulatory healthcare.Novelsensors,lowpowersolutionsforprocessingandwirelessconnectivityare creating newopportunitiesforwearabledeviceswhichallowcontinuousandlongtermmonitoring, while maintainingfreedomofmovementfortheusers.Thispaperpresentsalow-powerembedded platform withnovelhighsensitivityelectricpotentialdrysurfacesensorsthatcanbeusedineither contact ornon-contactmodetomeasurebiomedicalsignals.Theproposedlowpowersystemis optimized tocomputetheheartrateandrespiratoryrateclosetothesensors.Thisapproachreducesthe amount ofdatathatneedstobetransmittedtoahostdevice.Itallowsalsotheplatformtobe autonomous andwearableorevenbeusedincarsforapplicationssuchasdriverdrowsinessdetection. Experimental measurementsshowtheacquisitionandtheprocessingofdatafromsensorsandthelow powerconsumptionachievedwiththenodeindifferentmodesofoperation.
