Historical evolution of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions embodied in Italian aluminium was analysed by proposing a combination of MFA and LCA methodologies. Two models were applied to the anthropogenic aluminium cycle to quantify flows and in-use stock and potentials of GHG emissions reduction. The results allowed to determine the carbon footprint over years 1960-2009 related with the metal production; the research even highlighted the disparity when counting carbon emissions from production and the usage of aluminium whether international flows of the metal are considered.

Abstract

Historical evolution of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions embodied in Italian aluminium was analysed by proposing a combination of MFA and LCA methodologies. Two models were applied to the anthropogenic aluminium cycle to quantify flows and in-use stock and potentials of GHG emissions reduction. The results allowed to determine the carbon footprint over years 1960-2009 related with the metal production; the research even highlighted the disparity when counting carbon emissions from production and the usage of aluminium whether international flows of the metal are considered.
