The present work investigates the level of knowledge of Basel II in a sample of customers of cooperatives banks in Emilia Romagna in 2007. First, knowledge of Basel II has increased over time; three quarter of firms in the present study state to be informed on Basel II. Firms do not only increas the level and quality of information, but react to Basel II regulation in a structural way, by improving the debt to equity ratio. Secondly, the perception of Basel II effects is influenced by the intensity of bank-firm relationship. Third, firms do not perceive any significant restriction in the amount of credit, but they experience a increase in the cost of credit.
