This paper describes the tests conducted on commercial, 2000mAh Li-Ion cells in order to design a suitable charging control device. The final application of this system will be the power storage on board a low-cost microsatellite (ALMASat), currently being assembled for launch at the Aerospace laboratories of the University of Bologna in Forlì. Several printed circuit boards (PCB), based on commercially available integrated circuits, have been developed and compared with respect to their (a) robustness (b) design flexibility and (c) overall efficiency. In particular, we have assembled a very robust dissipative Li-Ion charging circuit and a more efficient and accurate (but more sensitive to the operating conditions) switching charging regulator. The lessons learned, and the final design of the Li-Ion battery control circuit are also discussed in the paper.
