The experience of building a supply chain in China for a leading company in low-volumes, high-complexity business is presented and discussed. Key issues of its sourcing strategy and supply management practices, particularly in the stages of scouting/selection, development, and in the consolidation of the relationships are shown. It is argued that through flexible attitude in scouting, direct supplier development, and efforts of supplier retention, companies operating in this kind of business can overcome the initial difficulties and make their experience successful. An original form of supplier development, involving the company’s traditional suppliers in an effort to improve the performance of the Chinese ones, is also presented and discussed.
