This paper examines the architectural and decorative history of the Complex of San Giovanni in Monte in Bologna. Its story is particularly relevant to the theme of the conference The Forms of Confinement. Monasteries and Prisons, as this site—central to the city’s urban development since the Roman era and home to a monastery at least from the late tenth century—was transformed into a prison during the French occupation and remained so until its later conversion into a university facility.
