The paper describes the study of an areal sampling methodology suitable for the analysis of changes in the rural built environment in wide-area studies. The work is focused on the implementation of a stratified areal sampling procedure for the assessment of changes in built areas when digital data are not available on the entire study territory, and can be surveyed only on selected sample areas. The method have been adopted for the analyses on a super-municipal study area of northern Italy and the soil consumption rate in the last thirty years has been estimated.
