This article examines the paradoxical “ethereal weight” of mediatization, arguing that contemporary media do not simply transmit content but reshape the conditions of presence, value, and social interaction. Mediatization is approached as a semiotic process that reorganizes the coupling between subjects, institutions, and environments, producing new regimes of visibility and accountability while simultaneously generating forms of abstraction and dematerialization. The paper analyzes how media dispositifs redistribute agency, alter the balance between expression and experience, and reconfigure the thresholds between public and private spheres. Rather than treating media as neutral channels, it conceptualizes them as environments that impose specific modal constraints and affordances on communicative practices. This transformation affects identity construction, collective memory, and the negotiation of legitimacy. Ultimately, the article proposes a semiotic framework capable of grasping mediatization as both a structuring force and a destabilizing factor within contemporary cultural ecologies.

Abstract
Ultimately, the article proposes a semiotic framework capable of grasping mediatization as both a structuring force and a destabilizing factor within contemporary cultural ecologies.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
