El poder del sonido: el miedo de los sátiros en Ichneutaí de Sófocles

Fear is a characteristic emotion of the Satyrs in the Greek satyr play, as is clearly illustrated, for example, in the final scene of Euripides’ Cyclops (vv. 632-655). In the fragmentary text of Sophocles’ Ichneutaí as well (fr. 314.124–175), the Chorus is overtaken by a sudden and overwhelming fear. In analyzing this passage, my aim is to explore how fear is manifested and what causes it, with particular attention to the terms and imagery used to describe it. I will also seek to understand how the audience might have responded to the staging of this scene. The analysis takes into account the dramatic genre to which the text belongs, while also drawing comparisons with various authors and genres from archaic and classical Greek literature.
