This article, which is preliminary to a critical edition with commentary of the epigrams attributed to Lucian of Samosata, illustrates, through a series of examples, the problems posed by these texts, the authenticity of which constitutes a vexata quaestio. Following a reflection on the criteria that should guide the constitution of the corpus of 'Lucianic' epigrams, the article analyzes the genres and themes of the compositions attributed to Lucian and discusses the following texts in detail: AP 7.308, for which the authorship of Julian of Egypt is proposed; AP 6.17, which should perhaps be restored to Lucillius; the gnomic poems AP 10.27 and 10.31; AP 9.120, 11.410, 11.431, and 11.435, which share a prosodic peculiarity with AP 10.27, a possible clue to authorial identity; finally, AP 11.427, to highlight a lexical element that may be useful for dating purposes. The work concludes with some considerations on the future directions that research should pursue.
