Banning, reasoning or waiting: The three institutional responses of Italian universities to the challenge of generative Artificial Intelligence | Vieta, ragiona o aspetta Le tre risposte istituzionali delle università italiane alla sfida dell’Intelligenza Artificiale generativa

This article is intended to contribute to the discussion on how universities address the ‘Generative AI challenge’. An overview of the studies that have flourished in many fields of knowledge (from sociology to computer science) in recent years highlights the promises and threats brought about by generative AI. It then moves on to analyse the institutional responses universities have adopted since the launch of ChatGPT. Finally, it reflects on the potential for inequality that generative AI could bring to the Italian university system and its territorial articulations regarding human, financial and organisational resources if not adequately addressed.
