Rather than asking whether women kill men, this volume addresses the question of how and why they may kill them, and how art, myth and literature have taken this into account. To better define the subject, the idea of starting from the category of 'masculicide', modelled on 'femicide' in crime news, was quickly dismissed. It was also deemed appropriate to exclude the subject of female warriors, as this falls outside the scope of 'female murderers' for obvious reasons. Despite these limitations, the scope of the investigation remains extensive, ranging from political and religious murders to ritual killings, and from unsuspected poisoners to mothers who kill their children. In the realm of myth, we encounter diverse figures such as the Greek Bacchantes, the Rusalki of Slavic tradition, and the ogres of fairy tales. There is also no shortage of goddess and saint murderers. Finally, musical theatre, painting and cinema offer countless examples of real and imaginary female murderers (consider comics and science fiction, for example). The contributions in this volume cover this wide variety of cases, with proposals ranging from Russian, German, English and Romance languages to the classical Greek and medieval Persian worlds. While certainly not exhaustive, this provides a representative overview of how the phenomenon has been interpreted by artists and writers of every era and country.
