This study aims to show how the polysemy of terms in the field of art can be revealed using software tools to analyze a parallel database following a quantitative approach. We will illustrate how the Italian word "tondo" (“round”), taken from the general lexicon, has the essential characteristics of a term, yet remains polysemous. We will show that this term belongs to several subfields (architecture, sculpture and painting), and that several different interpretations can be identified along the semantic continuum between generaland specialized language, in related subfields, and even within the same subfield.
