Eco’s Lector in fabula (1978) discusses Peirce’s theory of signs and projects it onto some problems of textual semiotics. Eco reconstructs Peirce’s theory of “meaning” through a series of “interpretive wanderings” throughout the Collected Papers. According to Eco, the immediate object is the way in which the dynamic object is focused, this way being the ground or meaning; furthermore, ground, meaning and interpretant are in fact the same thing. In this article I try to show that ground, immediate object and interpretant are in fact distinct concepts that emerge at distinct moments in the author’s spiritual development, and that serve to describe distinct aspects of the mechanism of the sign’s functioning. Eco considers them on the same level because he needs a theoretical basis for his textual semiotics. But in doing so his “interpretive wanderings” reveal to be uses and not interpretations of Peirce.

Abstract
But in doing so his “interpretive wanderings” reveal to be uses and not interpretations of Peirce.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
