Before introducing the articles in the volume, a critical exploration is conducted in synchrony and diachrony from an original point of view, that of a semiotic anthropology and a ecological epistemology heir in particular to the work of E. Cassirer. The heuristic hypothesis which guides the whole is that no ecology is possible without the consideration of different apprehensions of making sense, weaving a close link between the material and symbolic dimensions of living.
