Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick is a work of great stylistic complexity. The only Catalan translation that has been done so far is Maria-Antònia Oliver’s 1984 acclaimed version. In this article we analyse Oliver’s treatment of the voices of four characters displaying a variety of geolectal and sociolectal features with various functions. After describing the phenomenon of fictitive orality and outlining the problems it poses for translation, we analyse and compare the source and target texts in a selection of fragments illustrating the characteristics of the four voices analysed, and conclude that Oliver managed to render them in her translation using a combination of expected and original strategies.
