This article aims at presenting a sociosemiotic reflection about the “discursive arena” regarding fascist heritage in Italy, as triggered by an article by American historian Ruth Ben-Ghiat asking why fascist monuments are still standing in Italy. Through a quick analysis of Ben-Ghiat article and other articles published in response to her, I try to reflect about different axiologies and narrative schemes of a cultural heritage that is politically problematic. A discursive and sociosemiotic approach to cultural heritage is proposed.

Abstract

This article aims at presenting a sociosemiotic reflection about the “discursive arena” regarding fascist heritage in Italy, as triggered by an article by American historian Ruth Ben-Ghiat asking why fascist monuments are still standing in Italy. Through a quick analysis of Ben-Ghiat article and other articles published in response to her, I try to reflect about different axiologies and narrative schemes of a cultural heritage that is politically problematic. A discursive and sociosemiotic approach to cultural heritage is proposed.
