This article argues that the spatial dimension is crucial for understanding Grotius’s relationship with modernity as well as his innovative reinterpretation of the European legal tradition. It will be shown how, starting from a “boundless” conception of the natural law and subjective rights, from the opposition between land and sea spaces and from his explanation of the origins and the features of sovereignty and property, Grotius outlined a set of flexible strategies to qualify and organize the spaces of the early-modern European expansion.

Abstract
This article argues that the spatial dimension is crucial for understanding Grotius’s relationship with modernity as well as his innovative reinterpretation of the European legal tradition. It will be shown how, starting from a “boundless” conception of the natural law and subjective rights, from the opposition between land and sea spaces and from his explanation of the origins and the features of sovereignty and property, Grotius outlined a set of flexible strategies to qualify and organize the spaces of the early-modern European expansion.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
