The European Parliament's ambitions to represent a European People and the political-institutional development that led to the increasing of the EP's powers clash with the reluctance of the Member States to cede sovereignty. This leads to a series of questions: what direction is taking the European Union? Will the integration process eventually be completed in a federal sense? Will the democratic deficit finally be overcome? The chapter offers an historical-political overview of the origins, the powers, and the main criticisms of the European Parliament, in order to better grasp the complexity of these questions.

Abstract
The European Parliament's ambitions to represent a European People and the political-institutional development that led to the increasing of the EP's powers clash with the reluctance of the Member States to cede sovereignty. This leads to a series of questions: what direction is taking the European Union? Will the integration process eventually be completed in a federal sense? Will the democratic deficit finally be overcome? The chapter offers an historical-political overview of the origins, the powers, and the main criticisms of the European Parliament, in order to better grasp the complexity of these questions.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
