Following the methodological tide of the Historical and Theological Lexicon of the Septuagint, the article explores the functions and usages of the verb ἐντρέπω in the Septuagint (with a special focus on the Pentateuch and the Psalms), in comparison to its attestations in Greek literature and documentary sources. The fluctuations in the relative frequency of the root in different contexts and the semantical reinterpretation that occurs in the Hellenistic period are highlighted through the analysis of exemplary passages. Issues of etymology and word formation are also explored, to recover the communicative strategies of different Septuagint translators. The semantical passage between the ideas of ‘respect’ and ‘shame’ is considered in relation to the translators’ ability to craft the Greek language to fit their purposes.

Abstract
The semantical passage between the ideas of ‘respect’ and ‘shame’ is considered in relation to the translators’ ability to craft the Greek language to fit their purposes.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
