Starting from some considerations on the potential of the songs as words set to music in the development of linguistic competence, the paper focuses on the importance of using authentic lyrics of rap, trap and drill songs in the context of language teaching. The first paragraph draws the reader's attention to the usefulness of the words set to music in the field of language education. The second and third paragraphs focus on the peculi- arities and challenges of rap lyrics as genuinely authentic material. The fourth paragraph reflects on the characteristics of lyrics produced by sec- ond-generation Italian authors, highlighting their particular usefulness and representativeness of the current sociolinguistic landscape. The fifth para- graph presents a study that highlights the relevance of presenting in the lan- guage class the lexical characteristics of some authors representative of the three main generations in the Italian rap scene. Finally, the sixth paragraph offers a synthetic interpretation of the data presented from the perspective of language education.
