This essay explores, in the case of Rome, how the presence of the ancient Roman Imperial Walls became a source of inspiration for the new architecture built in the vicinity of the Walls in the '60s. It is very much an undiscovered topic, and represents an appropriate and a truthful way to understand how the "eternal city" was able to respond to the most urgent demands of modernisation within the historic fabric.
