The aim of this paper is to explore the relationship between ‘representation’ and ‘simulation’ in relation to the classification of authorial marginalia, in particular by present-ing and commenting on my taxonomy of Umberto Eco’s autograph marginalia in his modern library collections. In the first section, I will make some preliminary remarks on dictionaries and encyclopaedias as models of representation and their application to the classification of marginalia. In the second section, I will then present and discuss the four sections of Eco’s marginalia map, highlighting their original aspects and proposing some concrete examples. In conclusion, a final reflection will be offered on the merits of the modelling approaches adopted and the efficacy of the Echian encyclopaedic model

Abstract
