As many other Italian and European cities, in recent years Bologna has been experiencing a significant growth in its student population enrolled at the University of Bologna, especially among those coming from other cities. This aligns with the urban phenomenon of studentification, which may have a twofold consequence: it serves as a catalyst for city development, but it also poses the risk of generating conflicts with the local population and eases a ghettoized community, particularly in areas lacking essential services. The aim of this research is to identify essential services for students in relation to the proximity to their accommodation, to understand possible gaps and consequently improve student’s overall living experience. By applying the proximity flower method, the study aims to identify the student’s preferences in terms of urban and student-related services and facilities and the proximity of those to their homes. Consequently, this allows identifying those areas of the city that are better equipped to host an increase of student population. The method has been applied by surveying a sample population of students enrolled in the degree programmes of Engineering and Architecture area at the University of Bologna. From the analysis of the proximity flowers obtained, several recurring aspects have emerged. Notably, these include the necessity of sustainable mobility services near homes, coupled with the demand for less formal and more versatile spaces where to study or perform leisure activities in a communal setting. These insights have contributed to better understanding the gap between the city supply and the students’ expectations, thus informing housing and urban policies.
